In this week’s edition of Executive Insider, we’re focusing on the company backgrounds of top private equity executives. Pulling data from BoardEx, we’ve looked at 24,000 executives at the top 1,000 PE firms and the companies they’ve worked for throughout their careers.
The results illuminated a few key pieces of information. First, investment banking giants led the way — 1,164 top PE executives worked at Goldman, Sachs & Co. at some point in their careers, while 1,034 PE executives worked at Morgan Stanley.
Further, right behind Goldman and Morgan Stanley, consulting monoliths McKinsey & Co. and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP came in third and fourth place, respectively, though both clocked numbers well under 1,000.
Two sectors, however, didn’t make great showings — household products and diversified industrials. In the household products category, only Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) made the list, while in diversified industrials only General Electric Co. (GE) brought enough executives into the PE fold to be counted.
